The Hardest Thing I’ve Ever Done
One of the hardest things that I’ve done in my business is talk about and acknowledge the things that happen in my personal life.
I have Meniere’s Disease, which is a chronic illness and imbalance of the fluid in the inner ear that causes dizziness, hearing loss and general misery when it’s episodic. Luckily for me, I can go long periods of time without having episodes and unluckily for me, I can go long periods of time with having episodes.
When I first started my business, I really worked hard to hide this reality from my clients, from people that I worked with and from colleagues. One of the reasons for that is because I’ve worked really hard over many, many years to figure out how to create a life that allows me to do my work and live with this illness. But I wasn’t confident that if I talked about it, that people wouldn’t judge me for it or that they wouldn’t choose to work with me because they might perceive that I couldn’t be reliable.
However, this is my reality and the more I’m in business (I’m now four years in business) I realize it is important to talk about the things that we live with in our lives. For me, it’s a chronic illness that effects my ears. Other women have chronic illnesses that can affect them in other ways, and so many others are playing hurt in one way or another.
I live with a chronic illness and wild ambition!
And when I married the two of those, one of the things that I realized is that as difficult as it is for me to talk about this, it is important for us to recognize that we are whole beings as women. There are going to be days that we don’t feel our best.
The world needs more women in business and their ideas and women need more support to have their voices heard. That’s why I am passionate about the work I do with women to grow their businesses that work for their lives by creating plans and teaching strategies that understand the reality of women’s lives and businesses (AKA there’s no hustle and grind tactics here). Because we do business differently.
